"IMAGINARY FRIENDS"/ AMV BBDO, London

DIRECTOR/ SCULPTOR: LAUREN INDOVINA / PRODUCER: MATT CREEDEN / PRODUCTION COMPANY: PSYOP

ABOUT

Neysa Hornsburgh of PSYOP came to me with the project. The team at AMV BBDO was going to interview kids around London about their imaginary friends and then commission design and story telling animation studios to complete the sculptures. PSYOP and Aardman Animation were two of the leading teams to complete the task.

I have a background in making large sculptures. I flew to London and interviewed two kids in particular that studio out; Julio Ruth. Julio was shy. He did, however, have an imaginary friend that was a 7 foot tall lockness monster named "Nessi". This was not at all terrifying to me. Some of my high school projects were 7 feet tall ceramic puppets.

Ruth was a little girl who lived in a flat with her mom. It was too small of a flat to have a cat, so Ruth told me she imagined one instead. Her cat was named "Lily".

I couldn't decide which of these two "imaginary friends" to build so I did both using a combintation of chicken wire and fabric. I wanted them to look like friends from the same world, and I personally love black and white, so I build them using greyscale fluffy fabric. Matt Creeden, my amazing producer, physically crated them to London. It was intense but probably the most fun I've ever had making something important for kids.
